June 1, Monthly Meeting - Can beavers help heal burn scars after wildfires? Colorado researchers built their own dams to find out.

When:
Mon, June 1, 7:00pm – 8:00pm
Where:
Trinity Lutheran Church, 3333 Duffield Ave, Loveland, CO 80538 (map)
Description:
Have you wondered how important wildlife and beavers are in our mountain ecosystems and why the beavers have vacated our area?

Chuck Rhoades and Tim Fegel will bring their researched-based beaver stories to our June 1 meeting.

Tim Fegel is the Biogeochemistry Lab Manager at the United States Forest Service’s Rocky Mountain Research Station in Colorado. His work focuses on understanding the interactions between terrestrial and aquatic systems, with an emphasis on how these interfaces respond to disturbance and land use change. Through this work, he contributes to the development of science-based management strategies that support resilient watersheds and sustainable land use practices.

Chuck Rhoades is a biogeochemist who studies forest watershed and water quality at the US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station in Colorado. His research evaluates linkages between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in managed and unmanaged areas. For the past 20 years he has studied wildfire responses and ecosystem recovery after severe wildfires. Much of his work addresses the role of upland and riparian soils and vegetation in regulating nitrogen and carbon retention and export from forest watersheds and how ecological disturbance and land management alter these processes.

The talk will cover some of the newer publications from the Cameron Peak Fire and provide new direction about post-fire stream restoration, including information about beaver mimicry.

We hope to see you there!
