Description

Pawnee Buttes are two enormous, 300 feet tall, capped sandstone structures left after erosion of the surrounding high plains surface. Mini badlands, smaller rock towers and canyons surround them. It is really a striking contrast to the predictable prairie seen in Pawnee National Grasslands and is located 60 miles northeast of Greeley. We will hike two generally easy trails to view the canyons in the raptor area and then the main trail to the buttes themselves. This is an open area with views that stretch for miles on terrain that will seem strange to those of us accustomed to trees and mountains, but has its own beauty. The hike is about 5.5 miles with elevation change of 650 feet and overall elevation of about 5,000 feet. To sign on, contact Tom Bruch at tombruch1964@gmail.com
